Kevin McCarthy is likely to soon become Speaker of the House now that his original 20 Republican opponents have softened their votes on the 12th and 13th ballots for electing the gavel holder. The epic stonewalling of McCarthy’s potential coronation hasn’t been rivaled since 1859, the last year the House went this long without electing a Speaker. Ironically, that date is within a decade of the dates of birth of many of Joe Biden’s core mail-ballot voters in Philadelphia, but that is just a minor detail (sarcasm intended).
In this article, I will explain why the resistance, even if futile and brief in the scope of a two-year Congress, matters. Just like in 2016, when it was her turn, it also appears to be Kevin McCarthy’s turn to be House Speaker. Those types of foregone conclusions are exactly why people hate the political component of our nation, and regularly give Congress single-digit approval ratings (and single-finger greetings when passing the Capitol). Of course, the kingmaker himself, President Trump, has endorsed McCarthy, but the MAGA base is so thoroughly glued to each passing political detail that they’ve developed the ability to sift through and separate America First favorites from Ukraine first sellouts.
McCarthy endures 12th ballot voting
McCarthy is certainly not an America First Republican, any way you slice it. He has been part of the D.C. bureaucracy since being sworn in 16 years ago, has waffled on securing the border, supports President Trump only when politically expedient to do so, readily supports welfare payments of billions of dollars to Ukraine, and does little to cast doubt on the means of how Joe Biden’s 2020 election “win” was obtained. I could go on, but if you want the full scoop on just how swampy McCarthy is, you’re best served subscribing to Ivan Raiklin’s SubStack, which features in-depth investigative work. To his credit, Ivan was on top of any talk about a potential “Speaker Trump” long before it was kicked up this week on a wider scale.
In the past day or two, President Trump has been posting about assuming the Speakership, even if in passing humor. Today, reports surfaced that President Trump is willing to serve in the position. It was and still is an exciting proposition to consider, one that would be the most entertaining political episode since Hillary Clinton’s election watch party turned in a bursting dam unable to hold back a torrent of tears; however, with McCarthy just four votes away from securing the position on this evening’s 14th ballot, it appears the “Rebels” are winding down the opposition, perhaps because they’re increasingly satisfied with concessions.
Here are some of the concessions being reported by Time:
